Detroit Kung Fu Academy

MY4 Sifu Lung Yat Tung Owen Matson

MY4 Sifu Lung Yat Tung started his training in Iowa City under Sifu Moy Yat Tung. He moved to Detroit in 2000, where he continued his Kung Fu practice and put together a private workgroup.

As this group grew, he became sanctioned as a Sifu in the lineage in 2002 and began taking students publicly in 2006 as the Detroit Kung Fu Academy opened its doors. He has succeeded as a professional Sifu since then.

After becoming a Sifu, he trained aggressively with his Sifu Moy Yat Tung, and the Grandmaster of the lineage Moy Tung. During this time he gained significant insight into the Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) system that he works to pass onto his students.

Lung Yat Tung has hosted Grand Master Moy Tung on trips to Hong Kong and mainland China. This began connecting the American martial art Masters to Southern Chinese history.

The Detroit Kung Fu Academy has expanded, and MY4 Sifu Lung Yat Tung is now also a SiGung, with student Sifus teaching the Ving Tsun Kung Fu system in the three Detroit schools (Michigan Ave; Berkley; and Downriver); and in Asheville, NC; Chicago, IL; and Vienna, Austria.

Downriver Location Info

Detroit Kung Fu teaches the Ving Tsun (wing chun) system of martial arts, for self-defense, health and fitness. Ving Tsun training is relaxed, disciplined exercise, and it builds a strong mind and body. The fighting skills are practical; students learn to stay on their feet in a fight, blocking-and-hitting at the same time. Private lessons and group classes are offered.

There are three Detroit Kung Fu schools; Kung Fu Detroit Downriver classes are held in the Taylor Recreation Center on Goddard Rd, in between the 75, 94, 24 and 39. Southgate, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Allen Park and Melvindale are nearby.
